Understanding Allowances: DA, HRA, and TA

The salary of a government employee in India consists of basic pay plus several variables that protect purchasing power against inflation and cover local living costs:

  • Dearness Allowance (DA): Calculated as a percentage of Basic Pay. It is revised twice a year (usually in January and July) by the Central Cabinet.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): Divided into three classes based on city population:
    • Class X (Metros): 30% HRA (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad).
    • Class Y (Urban/Tier-2): 20% HRA (e.g. Lucknow, Patna, Jaipur, Bhopal, etc.).
    • Class Z (Rural/Tier-3): 10% HRA (all other towns and villages).
  • Transport Allowance (TA): Paid to cover commuting costs. The base TA depends on the pay level and city class, and it also attracts DA (DA on TA) which is calculated automatically by our tool.

Standard Deductions (NPS and CGHS)

Your **Net In-Hand Salary** is Gross Salary minus mandatory monthly government contributions:

  • National Pension System (NPS): Standard employee deduction is **10% of (Basic Pay + DA)**. The government contributes an additional 14%.
  • Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS): Flat deduction based on pay levels (ranging roughly between ₹250 to ₹1000) that qualifies employees for medical coverage.
